The journey undertaken by Venezia1937 allows tourists who choose to travel with us to enjoy an unforgettable travel experience while mitigating part of the negative environmental impact and promoting the protection of the city.

In 2018, CO2 emissions produced by the tourism sector accounted for 8% of global emissions, with a trend expected to increase (Nature, 2018). This negative impact contributes to climate change, whose harmful effects particularly lead to biodiversity loss and the deterioration of natural environments.


Collaboration
The initiative, which combines experiential tourism with environmental protection, is promoted through the collaboration between Venezia1937 and the startup Sea the Change, which offers innovative solutions through concrete actions to generate a positive impact on marine ecosystems to which the city of Venice is strongly connected. Following a quantification of the CO₂ emissions generated by its services, Venezia 1937 began outlining possible emission reduction strategies. In addition, it decided to include voluntary compensation of emissions generated by transport through the purchase of Blue Carbon Credits.


How?

Thanks to the presence of macroalgae and phytoplankton, lagoon ecosystems perform Carbon capture* and Carbon storage functions, providing valuable support in counteracting the effects of climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. With an absorption rate up to 50 times higher than tropical forests, the Venetian salt marshes sequester approximately 43,000 tons of CO₂ every year (University of Padua). Maintenance measures in these environments within the fishing valleys of Caposile ensure that they continue to perform these functions. Choosing to offset your activities with Blue Carbon Credits is an act of protection for a unique ecosystem in the world. Furthermore, Sea the Change communicates the positive impact in terms of emission mitigation, biodiversity and local communities through reporting based on four international standards: GRI, ESRS, SDGs, Ocean Impact Navigator.

Our impact report
*Carbon capture refers to the process by which plant organisms absorb carbon in the form of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and use it in photosynthesis to produce oxygen and organic compounds, thereby reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. During this process, carbon is incorporated into plant tissues (Carbon Storage), preventing its immediate release into the atmosphere. When macroalgae and phytoplankton die, they settle on muddy seabeds where they act as true CO₂ storage systems.

European Commission on the Environment

The law enshrines in legislation the European Green Deal’s objective of making the European economy and society climate-neutral by 2050. This means that all EU countries must achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, primarily by reducing emissions, investing in green technologies and protecting the natural environment. The legislation will ensure that all European policies contribute to this and that all sectors of the economy and society play their part.
